Meet the new Hannah Twerk-tanna

She’s definitely not Hannah Montana anymore.

After a performance that ranged from mildly inappropriate to how-has-she-not-been-kicked-off-the-stage-yet, VMA watchers everywhere were left to try to understand what Miley Cyrus had just done, exactly.

“I thought it was… different,” said freshman Josie Urias.

Few can argue with that statement. While the VMAs are no stranger to scandals, Miley has the dubious honor of being the first person to strip and then proceed to twerk upon a married man. And it’s probably best to just erase whatever she was doing with that foam finger from our memories forever. Whatever was going on, there’s no doubt that it was all the more shocking coming from someone who, just a few years ago, was every pre-teen’s favorite innocent Disney star.

“People are used to her being Hannah Montana,” said junior Jordan Farquhar. “And now she is not Hannah Montana… She was almost naked on stage, with her tongue, and foam finger and Robin Thicke’s body.”

The majority of students felt disgusted (or even scared) by her performance. Some students, however, feel that the media is making news out of nothing.

“It shouldn’t matter what a woman does,” said senior Sasha Thomasson.

Thomasson feels that the media “oversexualizes a woman’s body”, and whatever she did on that stage was just her expressing herself. However, she did agree that it may not have been the best thing for the younger VMA viewers to see.

“They were probably scared,” said Thomasson.

Thomasson, however, isn’t the only student that feels its best to just leave Miley alone. Many students feel that she is beyond understanding, and trying is a waste of time.

“I think Miley is like a cloud. Just let her be,” said senior Ryan Sylvia. “You don’t mess with clouds.”

Ryan offered an equally poetic theory as to why Miley felt the need to “perform” in the way she did.

“It was the cry of her unsatisfied popularity…because her songs haven’t sold very well,” said Sylvia.

Not everyone feels that her motives were quite so noble and poetic. Given that her performance is coming so soon after her engagement Liam Hemsworth fell through, it isn’t hard to imagine that she might have had an ulterior motive for her performance.

“I feel like she was trying to get her ex-fiancées attention… and if she was trying to get attention, it definitely worked,” said junior Jillian Gross.

Ultimately, the best question to ask ourselves is whether or not her performance was really a big deal, or just a harmless (if vaguely terrifying) mishap. And the conclusion of most students is that it was the latter.

“She can do what she wants as long as she’s having fun,” said Thomasson.
