XC advances to Regionals

Third place for all, and for all, a good post-season.

The boys’ and girls’ Varsity Cross Country teams raced on October 28 for a chance to run at Regionals, continuing their advancement through the post-season. Both teams placed third, granting them each a spot at the Northern Region Championships on November 4.

“It is very exciting and I am really happy for our team because we have worked really hard for it,” said sophomore Maddie Wittich.

The teams have been training since June for the shot to get all the way to the AAA State meet on November 13. Getting out of the Patriot District counts one step closer to the goal.

“I was satisfied with our performance but I would say that we could do better at Regionals,” said senior Colin Taylor. “Our goal all season has been to get to States.”

Taylor, who came in second individually, led the boys’ team to their third place finish. Other boys who scored for the team were senior James King, 14th, senior Niko Sward, 22nd, junior Connor Burke, 23rd, and senior Eric Jensen, 33rd.

“I wanted a win to start off the post-season, but second place is the best consolation prize,” said Taylor.

On the girls’ side, the scoring five were led by senior Lauren Blackburn, 9th, followed by Wittich, 10th, freshman Jessica Simmons, 12th, senior Lisa Williams, 17th, and senior Jennifer Moore, 20th.

The meet was regarded by both teams as a “dress rehersal” for Regionals the next week, which was the more crucial of the two meets.

“It’s awesome, because we actually stand a change of getting to states this year,” said King.
