Winter sports wrap-up

Another year of Winter Sports has come and gone. The Spartan athletes entered the season with high hopes for the 2010-2011 year. Looking back, the Spartans had mixed success this year.

Despite going into the season looking to rebound from last year’s 2-18 record, the boy’s Varsity basketball team still had limited success as they battled through a tough schedule. They played two games against T.C. Williams High School, a game against Middleburg Academy, and a game against Chantilly High School. The team had six returning seniors, which included last year’s leading scorer, Ali Kazmi. On the bright side, the team did improve on last year’s two win season.

The girl’s Varsity program looked to come back for another strong year, and they delivered. Led by junior point guard April Robinson, the team only lost one game which was the championship game of a holiday tournament. Other than that, the team has won every game this season. Over three-quarters of their victories have been by twenty points or more, and their closest game (other than the loss) was by fourteen against T.C. Williams. They will look to continue their success from the season into the District tournament and hopefully the Regional tournament.

Spartan Swim & Dive, apart from getting fresh new spirit wear, was also successful in the water. The team only lost one meet against Woodson, who went undefeated this year. Apart from that, they won every meet they participated in. Unlike other team sports, Swim & Dive does not send entire teams to tournaments but sends individual athletes that do well in Districts. This year’s team sent several swimmers to the State tournament.

Led by senior Mark Ragan, the wrestling team also had a productive season. Like Swim & Dive, the team does not send everybody past Districts; only those who place in the top four in the Patriot District qualify to move on to the Regional tournament. The team did manage to send several players to the Regional playoffs, senior Mark Ragan among them.

Overall, the Spartans did fairly well in the winter season. They will look to continue their success in the spring through the returning State champion baseball team and their returning District champion lacrosse team.
