NFL struggles with increasing domestic violence charges

With the NFL season half way done, players are getting in trouble for their poor behavior.
“It’s a shame; they need help,” said Sports Marketing Teacher Vicki Petitbon.
NFL stars like Ray Rice, Greg Hardy, and Ray McDonald have all been involved in the domestic violence scandal. These players have lost their endorsements, their respect, and even their jobs.
“If players are role models and they are having problems with the law, what kind of example they are setting,” said Petitbon.
This is an emerging problem in the NFL, and needs to be stopped, if the NFL is going to continue to expand.
“To kill the problem of domestic violence counseling should be given and more awareness for this,” said Petitbon.
This not only has an impact on the players and their families, but our youth. You never want to be taught growing up that it is okay to hit a woman or hit anyone in that matter. It sets a bad example for the young athletes, who look up to NFL players.
“If anyone participated in this at WS they should be kicked off the team immediately and take counseling,” said Petitbon.
There is no place for it in football and there is no place for it in our society.
“It is terrible; you would think that by the time players get to the NFL they would know better,” said Coach Parker, who is a gym teacher and football coach at WS.
Parker said the punishment for players who are charged with domestic violence should be a yearlong suspension and a heavy fine. Parker believes the problem will continue because, it’s a society problem.
“But we could have classes on domestic violence and anger management,” said Parker.
People shouldn’t hit other people especially men, men shouldn’t be hitting women. This should be taught at a young age that domestic violence is not okay, or it will corrupt our youth.
“If players on Varsity did this, it would mean a dismissal from the team, and likely suspension,” said Parker.
This all started with Ray Rice when he brutally struck his wife, who was clearly incapable of defending herself.
“He definitely overreacted a little bit; no man should ever hit a woman,” said Sophomore Peter Muskett regarding the Ray Rice domestic violence scandal.
NFL players were all dismissed from their teams until further notice and have it tattooed to their names that they struck another human being.
“The punishment of players involved in domestic violence is fair,” said Musektt.
Muskett said any football player who hits another person should be kicked off the team and possibly be suspended.
“If anyone on varsity did this they would be kicked off the team and would face very severe punishment, because not only were they selfish towards the team but to our school,” said Muskett.
This problem needs to be squashed and is another problem that should have more awareness. There needs to be more classes, counseling, and help done for the people who have been victims or have initiated it.
“Awful situation, something like that could be avoided,” said Coach DePorter.
The athletes in the NFL should be done and have to go through counseling, said DePorter. DePorter also added that there should be more awareness and more recognition for the seriousness of domestic violence. Domestic violence isn’t a very talked about topic, but it is a very serious one.
“There is no place in our society for domestic violence or any type of violence in that matter,” said DePorter.
