Nothing says “bad girl” quite like Rihanna, and her new Puma x Fenty collection only makes that clear. You can already tell from the layer of smoke covering the catwalk, high mirrored ceilings, and bare grey trees that line the runway-and that’s before the models even come out.
Rihanna debuted her new collection with the brand Puma for the Fall/Winter 2016 season at New York Fashion week. While the black and white color palate, metallic silver hair, and sleek comfortable streetwear may have surprised the fashion world, the fact that this powerfully confident collection came from Rihanna did not.
As women’s creative director at Puma, Rihanna got to bring her own bold, already well-known, fashion ideas to the design table. Puma was lucky to get Rihanna’s face on their brand as a designer for the new collection, and not just a celebrity endorsement.
“If a celebrity doesn’t actually design the clothes, or isn’t good at it, they shouldn’t put their name on it,” said senior Tiffany Vu, who is very interested in fashion herself, but says Rihanna’s collection is not her style. This is an opinion of many who wonder what gives celebrities the right to create and sell expensive clothing.
As a fashion icon already, Rihanna was expected to deliver. Many fashion critics admire the Japanese-inspired cut of the clothing, the lace-up style of the bodysuits and tracksuits, and the comfort-level of the oversized sportswear and luxurious coats that still show a lot of skin. However, others don’t understand the practicality behind sportswear that you can’t work out in, or sneakers with stiletto heels and huge platforms.
Rihanna’s purpose of the look seems more to be about looking and feeling good, rather than actual use, as is often the case with high-fashion.
“The whole line just makes any girl feel confident in pretty clothes and shoes like those,” said junior Tia Luna.
So can real people feel as killer confident as RiRi herself? The price tag is what seems to be more of a barrier than anything else. With items ranging from $40 to $1,800, it is difficult for the average person to buy anything more than a pair of leggings or an accessory.
“I really like the shoes from her collection and I’d definitely buy some if they weren’t so expensive,” said junior Trisha Tran.
Someone must be buying the clothes however, because many of the most popular items are sold-out on several web sites. They don’t seem to be seen much on high school students. (and maybe that’s because of the school dress code).
Nevertheless, whatever Rihanna puts her face on stands out as much as the woman herself.
Rihanna stuns the world with her amazing looks and now with her creative new clothing line.
