Spidey swings onto the Broadway stage
First a comic book, then a movie, now a musical?
Along with several other movies, Spider Man is becoming a Broadway rock musical. The original comic book series has sparked several spin off comic book series, a successful movie franchise, and many children’s products like clothing and shoes.
Now, Spidey and friends head off to New York City to light up the Broadway stage with their intense battles.
Despite being delayed several times, the new show begins practice on November 14 and opening night is scheduled for December 21. The musical will follow the original plot line, which many Spider Man fans were glad to hear. Many of the actors’ names have been kept under wraps thus far in an effort to build suspense for the long-awaited show.
Another big name affiliated with this production is the director, Julie Taymor, who became famous for her direction of “The Lion King” in 1997. She was the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, therefore bringing experience and skill to the production.
However, getting the original plot line and big names to star in and produce the musical rendition of a thriving franchise doesn’t come cheap. The show is said by New York Times to be the “most expensive show in Broadway.” Tickets will run up to about $300, which is approximately three times the price of a normal ticket to other shows.
Broadway has titled the show, “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark,” which will feature music and lyrics by Bono and the Edge, names that may be contributing to the large bill for tickets.
More drama has been circulating in the realm of Spider Man regarding the long-anticipated fourth movie in the series.
Back in 2007, Spider Man 4 had already begun production, and a fifth movie was anticipated. However, just recently, the fourth movie was cancelled when the director withdrew from the production.
This sudden turn of event left many Spidey fans in distress over when the next installment would be available for their viewing pleasure.
To allay the fans’ displeasure, a Spider-Man “reboot” is scheduled to hit the theatres in July 2012 in 3-D.
In the meantime, the musical will be available to the most affluent and loyal Spider Man fans.
