We have many great debates in The Oracle, including boxers vs. briefs, baseball swag vs. lacrosse swag, and old music vs. new music. But the greatest debate has yet to be brought to light, and it is of utmost importance: smoothies vs. milkshakes. This may seem quite trivial to the average person, there is plenty to think about when making the final decision. With all the new eateries that have been recently coming to Springfield, we have many options to choose from. As we all know, BGR has opened with an expected bang. However, this restaurant has more than just the traditional burger and fries. I had the opportunity to try its many milkshakes when an employee and good friend of mine offered me a customary taste tester. I tried one of each: strawberry, double chocolate, and the shake flavor of the month, Bailey’s cream. This being my first taste of milkshakes in the spring season, my mouth was a very happy camper. Milkshakes are also available at other local places, including our friendly neighborhood McDonald’s. They have recently made a change in their milkshake presentation, adding decorative whipped cream and a cherry on top. Don’t get to excited about the upcoming Boardwalk Fries where Village Chicken used to be, though; milkshakes seem to be the main ingredient missing to their menu. If you’re trying to cut down on sweets, milkshakes aren’t always the best option. Another refreshing alternative for people to sip on a hot, sunny day is smoothies. Unfortunately, smoothies seem to be a very unappreciated drink, possibly because the opportunities in Springfield to get one are limited. Ice Berry, near the beloved Chipotle, is a great option that is often over looked. It has a very peaceful and quiet atmosphere for people to enjoy delicious yogurt smoothies. With flavor combinations such as honeydew melon yogurt and kiwi fruit to mix, Ice Berry adds the healthy West Coast atmosphere which Springfield seriously lacks. If you have the means and don’t mind the drive to Kingstowne, Robeks is an option as well. This place is the smoothie haven of all smoothie enthusiasts in the area. It has so many supplements as well as different juices and flavors, you could go there and get something completely different every time. It is an excellent healthy treat and it’s fun mixing and matching all the different options. Finally, there is the standard McDonald’s that now serves two kinds of smoothies on the McCabe menu: Wild Berry and Strawberry Banana. Despite their artificiality compared to the other smoothie alternatives, they are a yummy option as well.
