The People have spoken!
PCAs came and went, and did we really care?
A new year, a new awards ceremony.
The People’s Choice Award came and went on January 8th, but we on the Oracle staff know our readers prioritized their homework over an awards ceremony on a Wednesday night (right?). So, just in case you didn’t have the chance to watch this riveting ceremony, we have your back.
The People’s Choice Awards are, for those not in the know, an awards ceremony in which you (yes you!) pick the winners. The public gets to vote on their favorite artists, actors, movies, and TV shows across a variety of genres. So who won?
Well, there are too many awards to cover them all in this paper (check out the People’s Choice Awards website for a complete list), but we’ll focus on the ones a WS student ought to care about. First off, American Horror Story won Favorite TV Movie or Miniseries. Incredible, considering it beat out competition as fierce as Sharknado.
That’s right, AHS is, according to voters, a superior work of art than a movie about a sentient tornado composed entirely of sharks. Tough choice.
In other news, Leonardo DiCaprio won Favorite Dramatic Movie Actor. He may be Oscar-less until the day he dies, but at least he can console himself knowing his fans love him. That’s more important than some silly Oscar, right?
Taylor Swift was also a big winner in the ceremony, being voted Favorite Country Artist. Interestingly enough, she beat out several other artists that actually perform country music. However, she shouldn’t get too cocky, as Tim McGraw was voted Favorite Country Music Icon. Totally different awards. She’s an iconic artist, but he’s an artist… that’s also an icon. Much more prestigious.
One Direction won Favorite Band, but whether that’s an achievement for them or just a sign that the voting system malfunctioned remains to be seen.
There were many winners (and even more losers, of course), but perhaps the most significant part of the awards ceremony was that it passed by so quietly. No Miley Cyrus doing unmentionable things with a teddy bear, no Lady Gaga in a meat dress. Just a bunch of people winning things. That’s weirdly unusual in this day and age.
Maybe it’s best you didn’t watch.
