Mr. West is at it again.
2016 has been an extremely busy year for Kanye West. Also known as Yeezy, West has created an album, two music videos, revealed the next installment of his prestigious clothing line Yeezy Season 4, made a speech at the Video Music Awards, and is currently on a sold out tour.
To start things off, West released his highly anticipated album, “The Life of Pablo” in February. The album featured many popular artists like Chance the Rapper, Ty Dolla $ign, Desiigner, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Frank Ocean, Young Thug, Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, and The Weeknd. West and these artists made “The Life of Pablo” one of, if not the, most popular album released in 2016.
Enough about the album. In July, West released the very controversial video for the song “Famous.” The video featured twelve scantily clad wax figures of West, Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Amber Rose, Ray J, George Bush, Anna Wintour, Donald Trump, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Caitlyn Jenner, and Bill Cosby. Senior Matthew King was a little weirded out by the “Famous” video.
“I thought it was weird. He was trying to portray a message, but I don’t know the message,” King said.
The message that West was trying to display in the video was how he feels about everyone in the video. Every person who had a wax figure featured in the video has had some sort of significant connection with West in 2016 or years prior. Despite whatever West was attempting to portray in the “Famous” video, it did gain a lot of publicity.
The next video that West released was a visual for the song “Fade.” This video featured the vocal talents of Ty Dolla $ign and the amazing dancing ability of Teyana Taylor. For those who may not know who Taylor is, she is an R&B artist who is signed to West’s G.O.O.D. Music label. She is also the wife of NBA champion, Iman Shumpert. Out of the two videos west released this year, senior Zach Davis prefers the Famous video.
“The Famous video was definitely the best one,” said Davis.
West debuted the visual in August during the Video Music Awards. The debut was a pleasant surprise for a worldwide audience. Basically the entire video is Taylor dancing around an empty gym to the song “Fade.” The video also feature Taylor’s husband, a tiger, a baby, and a lot of bubbles. Senior Danish Tanveer, along with plenty of other people around the world, was confused about what he has witnessed.
“What’s going on in the video has nothing to do with the song,” Tanveer said.
It is true that the video did not have anything to do with the lyrics in the song, but does that matter? It’s a Kanye West video; it still looked great and it put Teyana Taylor on everyone’s radar.
If you were confused by either one of these videos and are trying to interpret them – don’t. Only Kanye West knows what he’s doing because he’s just on an entire level above everyone else.
King had the right idea about not trying to figure out West for one reason:“It’s Kanye.”
