There are many ‘lasts’ for seniors. One of them is the spring pep-rally.
The students of WS came together in the newly renovated auditorium on April 6 and
experienced one last gathering for the year. For the Class of 2018, it would be the last one ever.
“It was kind of bittersweet. I think it was a really good pep rally and fun and I’m glad to be moving onto my next chapter so I think it was a good ending,” said Neil Kratzer.
The planning and organization of this pep rally took a lot of work by the leadership class. They had to adjust their plans according to a change of venue and organize the students participating in it. Seniors Leah Krompecher and Alex Reba were the representatives of the Class of 2018 and
acted as the announcers throughout the pep rally.
“It was a really fun experience to announce and although we had some setbacks, it was nice to see all of the school spirit one last time,” said Reba.
There were many parts to the pep rally. All the spring sports were recognized with the senior athletes wearing their gear and carrying banners. However for the first time, winter sport athletes of all grades were honored for their accomplishments. The rifle team is one of many winter sports that was finally recognized for winning Regionals.
“It’s really nice to finally be recognized as the rifle team because we’ve spent years without the school knowing we even existed,” said senior Peter McAuliffe.
The Madrigals performed the national anthem and the Hispanic Heritage Club was highlighted with time dedicated to show off their dancing. There was also a quick game of “Finish the Lyrics” with the seniors claiming victory in both pep rallies.
“I thought it was really fun. I like how the pep rallies have evolved during my time. I think the pep rallies give a lot of different people a platform such as the Hispanic Heritage Club, Madrigals and sport teams,” said senior Elissa Perdue.
One of the favorite items on the spring pep rally agenda is announcing the winners of the senior superlatives. The class of 2018 has been together throughout these past four years and the seniors have gotten to know each other very well. They get to think about what makes the graduating class unique.
“I think for the most part the senior superlatives were accurate. They are fun because we get to think of a group and kind of team building without having to be together,” said senior Ava Rysewyk.
Principle Michael Mukai concluded the pep rally with a speech congratulating the Class of 2018 and encouraging Spartans to go out and change the world to mixed opinions.
“A lot of people were upset with it. I wasn’t bothered by it. It just seemed like an attempt to motivate and make the students feel hopeful for our futures despite the reality we live in today,” said senior Alex Euwema.
