Please turn your TVs to Channel Six…never mind, just listen.
With the retirement of Media Marketing teacher Bill Gibson, Friday morning announcements have lost their significance, along with their comedic touch.
Last year there were three things to look forward to about Friday. Number one: the weekend; number two: the football game and number three: Friday morning announcements.
There’s no better way to start off a school day than ending the first period of the day 10 minutes early to laugh and watch friends and classmates present class information in a comical way.
In all honesty, regular announcements are completely useless, simply because students are either talking through them or teachers are frantically finishing up their lessons and assigning homework.
It’s a known fact that our generation is a generation of visual learners. We rely so heavily on technology and invest so much time in watching things either on TV or the computer that when a video is presented or placed in front of us we are inclined to watch and pay attention; it’s just the way we’re wired.
If there were a pop quiz on announcements for both the video and PA variety, I would venture to guess that the majority of students would score increasingly higher after watching the video announcements. The visuals enhance the effect of the announcements themselves, making them all the more memorable.
So why not bring back video announcements? The point of announcements is to keep students informed about various clubs and activities going on around the school and Friday announcements easily accomplished that goal along with giving the students much-needed comic relief to start off the last day of the school week.
And yes, even though we are “visual” learners, the PowerPoint announcements just don’t cut it.
Even with the absence of Gibson there has to be someone who is capable of or even at least willing to bring back the beloved video announcements.
After a long week of school, the break provided by the video announcements is such a relief.
There are multimedia courses in this school that provide students the skills needed to make videos, along with marketing classes that possess advertising skills as well.
While it may be more difficult to do this year, the combination of certain classes should allow for students to bring back the Friday morning video announcements. Let’s face it, they are greatly missed.
