After receiving my schedule at Spartan Spree and comparing classes with my peers, I embarked on a journey to find my last high school locker.
My search began in the Foreign Language Hall, an area I knew was reserved for seniors.
I was hoping my locker would be located somewhere in that section so it would be easily accessible from any class; but to my dismay, the numbers were nowhere near what I was looking for.
Still feeling optimistic, I set out down the hall toward Senior Rail.
I felt a sense of anticipation at each gap in the rows, only to be shot down every time I saw that the locker numbers were still off.
After passing by Senior Rail and approaching the Waffle “S” painted on the wall, I began to feel uneasy.
My heart slowly sank as I continued to walk down that long corridor until at last I found my locker–seven spots away from the very end of the hallway near the Cafeteria.
At first I was a little disappointed that my locker was so far away from all the action, but then I reasoned that someone had to end up with those lockers, so why not me?
After all, I was seven spots from the end, which meant there were at least six other people in worse shape.
In fact, there was a large group of other seniors who, like me, were stuck with some of the most undesirable lockers in the school.
This positive attitude changed right away after the first week of school.
First off, I had been late to several classes on account of having to trek all the way across the school just to reach my locker.
I knew I always had the option of carrying all my supplies in my backpack, but I decided against this because it would defeat the whole purpose of having a locker in the first place.
More importantly, as I was walking down the Foreign Language Hall on the way to one of my classes, I saw several juniors putting their belongings into what should be senior lockers.
I would have embraced my unfortunate locker spot more readily had the central hallway been completely full of seniors, but not after seeing a bunch of 11th-graders with better lockers than a lot of the senior class.
I’m not saying the juniors should be stuck all the way in the back. It’s inconvenient for people of any grade to have a locker so far out of the way, but if there is an overflow of juniors then it seems unfair to take away some of the better lockers from the seniors.
Senior year is supposed to be the best year of high school.
We get our own parking spaces, our own lunch line and we get three-minute early dismissals on Fridays; it would make sense to also be considered first for prime locker locations.
