Letters: familiarity=popularity
To the Editors:
I am writing because I have taken an interest in an article in the April 29 issue by Lauren Giery called “Where is the Love?” The article talked about how non-sanctioned school sports don’t get the credit or support from the school that they deserve. Although this is true, there are also a lot of school-sponsored sports that don’t get a lot of attention, either. The sports that aren’t mainstream usually are the ones that don’t get the attention.
Wrestling, Track & Field, Gymnastics, Swim & Dive, Softball and Tennis are some of the school-sponsored sports that don’t get much attention. Freshman year, most people in my class didn’t know we even had a Gymnastics team, and the Wrestling team only had two home meets with barely any classmates showing up to support them.
Non-school-sanctioned sports don’t get a lot of attention not because they aren’t school-sanctioned, but because they aren’t one of the more popular sports like football or basketball.
Besides ice hockey, it would be hard to find one of the non-school-sanctioned along with the listed school-sponsored sports on a major television channel. This is because the average American just doesn’t find these sports as interesting as some of the mainstream sports.
I went to the rugby team’s first home game, and very few people there had any idea of the rules of the game or what was going on during the game. I couldn’t even find a person to tell me what it is called when someone scores in rugby. So, with such little knowledge of these smaller media sports, it is hard to blame people for not coming out and supporting these teams.
So yes, it would be nice for non-school-sanctioned sports to get more support and we as Spartans should come out and support our fellow classmates. Yes, it would be nice if non-school-sanctioned school sports could get a shout-out during the announcements. Yet it is hard to blame the student body for their lack of support.
Sincerely,
Avery Corbett
