A failure to communicate
West Springfield High School, a school full of great people with amazing ideas, but what’s a great idea if you don’t advertise it to the people?
I don’t know about the rest of you, but at school I feel constantly out of the loop. Even with the morning announcements telling me when club meeting and school sports are, I still feel like I’m in the dark.
In any school, there are bound to be rumors about anything and everything, but it seems to me like nobody here knows the difference between rumor and truth anymore. Do freshman have to take gym for four years? Does the Personal Finance class cost $700 to take after school? Nobody seems to have a clear answer. Maybe I’m asking the wrong people, but still, getting a straight answer would be nice for a change.
Rumors may be difficult to control, but school-authorized activities don’t really seem to be well advertised either, which would be easy to fix. It may have just been me, but I wasn’t sure if the “Fire and Ice Dance” was actually happening until about two weeks before. I don’t think it was just me, seeing as though they only sold a handful of tickets, having to cancel at the last minute. To this day, I still don’t know if it was a Sadie Hawkins dance.
There are so many ideas that the people in our school have like the winter dance or the spirit weeks that could be great successes and great for the school, but things can’t really be successful if nobody knows they’re actually happening.
Take the 26 Acts of Kindness as an example. Each day you’re supposed to do something nice for someone else, an act of kindness. In the beginning I thought it was just something made up by the leadership class, but it turns out that it’s for the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. That took me the better half of a week to figure out. It’s an excellently heartwarming idea, but I’m sure more people would’ve participated if they knew what it was for.
Spreading information can be tricky, but you’d think we could get a little better at it. Students at our school might be interested in doing things if only they knew they were going on. I don’t know about everyone else, but in my mind, out of the loop is not a fun place to be.
