Wait! We don’t get November 11 off?

The disgraceful Columbus is undeserving of our respect. American military service, however, very much is.

Our service men and women put their lives on the line every day for us and deserve are utmost respect, which is why we get Veterans Day off. Wait, we don’t get Veterans Day off?
Oh yeah that’s right, our school system decides to ignore the national holiday that is set aside to honor our countries most brave men and women.
The logic behind this decision seems much skewed. Our country’s veterans have put their very lives on the line in order for us to be able to go to school and celebrate whatever holiday we want, which means that they at least deserve the respect of the school observing the holiday.
Just like we do with Presidents Day when we do get the day off. I know it sounds like I’m just bucking for another day off from school, but switching the day off we have for Columbus day for Veterans day would give us the same amount of days off and still give the Veterans the respect that they deserve.
Take a look at all the holidays we get off every year— Presidents Day, Memorial Day and Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. All these days off are to respect the men and women who shaped and served our country for the better. The one thing that is missing here—veterans. The single reason why we still have a country to be shaped and formed.
A day off school may seem very petty and not important, but without there is very little chance that we would stop and recognize the importance of that day. We would just continue on with our very busy high school lives and not even give a second thought to the day.
Even our national government acknowledges Veterans Day and gives their employees a day off, yet the school system still chooses Columbus Day over Veterans Day, which is a completely pointless holiday celebrating a man who committed mass murder and enslaved Native Americans
Columbus didn’t even discover America as we know it, but rather discovered the Caribbean, where he proceeded to abuse their native peoples and spread multiple diseases. But we still get his day off, and not Veterans Day.
To many veterans this small gesture may mean nothing, but for others it could mean celebrating their special day with their children. In my opinion we should do anything to make life better for our veterans, especially on their day set aside for them.
