Blockbusters heat up summer

As the summer blockbuster season comes to an end and the movie reviews come out, WS created its own poll of our top movie picks for the summer. Gathering 200 votes, here is the top 10.

#10: “2 Guns”

with 4% of the vote. Starring Denzel Washington and Mark Walberg; A DEA agent and a naval intelligence officer are found in the midst of an attempt to infiltrate a drug cartel. But the twist is neither of them knew the other was undercover.

#9: “Star Trek into the Darkness”

receives 5% of the student vote. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leads the crew of Enterprise on a man hunt for a villain capable of mass destruction who attacked two Starfleet headquarters.

#8: “Iron Man 3”

pulls 6% of the students surveyed. As the “Iron Man” trilogy comes to an end, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) juggles a mid-life crisis as well as tracking down a covert, media hijacking terrorist, known to the public as the Mandarin.

#7: “Pacific Rim”

, 7% of students chose this sci-fi action flick as their favorite. Creating a different twist to the cliché apocalyptic movie, the human race is battling against monstrous sea creatures of the Pacific as Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam star as a former pilot and a trainee come together to lead the humans to victory.

#6: “Monsters University”

wins over 8% of WS’s hearts, “Monsters U” provides a look back at Sulley (John Goodman) and Mike’s (Billy Crystal) relationship during their college years; before we knew them as the inseparable duo they were in the original, “Monsters Inc.”.

#5: “The Heat”

this action comedy takes 8% of the vote. Sandra Bullock, a tense FBI agent, and Melissa McCarthy, a crude Boston cop, team up as an unusual pair to dismantle a pitiless drug lord’s cartel.

#4: “The Conjuring”

wins over 10% of its WS audience. This hair-raising horror flick features Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Framiga) and their struggle to get rid of a dark spirit haunting their family.

#3: “Despicable Me 2”

pulls a 13% margin; in the cute animation comedy’s sequel Gru (Steve Carell) is recruited to find a new super criminal, and in the process falls in love with his team member (Kristen Wiig).

#2: “We’re the Millers”

comes in second; this racy family comedy takes 16% of the vote. A struggling pot dealer (Jason Sudeikis) creates a fake family to smuggle an obscene amount of weed over the Mexican border into the US; ironically in a family RV.

And finally, topping the charts, “This is the End” wins with 17% of the WS votes. This apocalyptic comedy features dozens of celebrities (James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, etc.) starring as themselves teaming together to survive the end of the world.

Summer is a time for rest, relaxation and a little silliness, so The Oracle poll makes perfect sense..
