Will Affleck live up to the formal Batman’s expectations?

Step aside Christian Bale, and say hello to the new caped crusader, Ben Affleck.

No, not the Aflac duck, the A list actor that has starred in several major Hollywood films, and even directed the acclaimed film Argo.  Affleck has been selected by DC Comics to take on the role of Bruce Wayne in the upcoming film Batman vs. Superman which is set to hit theaters sometime in 2015. People’s reactions to the new casting were across the board.

“I was so disappointed. Christian Bale did such a great job in all of the previous Batman movies, so it would be weird to bring in a new actor,” said avid Batman fan and WS junior Kyle Presnell.

The new Batman and Superman movie will not be a sequel to The Dark Knight. It is a sequel to summer’s Man of Steel movie starring Henry Cavill as Superman.  The 2015 film does not have a set plot at the moment, but speculators believe that the plot will consist of a weary, work-torn Batman whose life as a superhero has taken a toll on him. In some mysterious, legendary way the two iconic superheroes will cross paths and either team up or engage in a ferocious battle against each other (maybe even both).

Affleck has starred in several movies with rough and stressful situations such as Argo, where he plays Tony Mendez, an exfiltration expert who plans to save American hostages in Iran, and The Town, in which he plays a small town bank robber. Because of Affleck’s strong resume and tough on screen persona, many people believe that Affleck will be great for the Batman role.

“Overall, Affleck is a good actor. I believe that with his experience in movies he can play the role pretty well,” said junior Amanuel Kassahun.

There has been a lot of controversy over whether or not Affleck should take on such a major role in the upcoming film. On Twitter, thousands of users expressed their dislike for the role change, while also making humorous remarks of how bad the next film is projected to be using the hashtag #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck.

Despite the negative attention DC Comics and Affleck have received, the film is still set to be released to theaters in 2015 just as planned. Good or bad, Batman and Superman fans will still flock to the theaters to view the much anticipated movie.

But according to the avid Batman fan Kyle Presnell,” He has big shoes to fill.”
