Acting is a commitment; it ensures that you’re tied with a show or movie until it ends.  James Franco has been an actor and has had great achievements, but he has done something that no one would imagine him doing, planning to earn a PhD at Yale.

Franco has played huge roles in multiple movies and has acted for almost fifteen years.  As a kid, he grew up in a family of five and lived in Palo Alto, California, then later was accepted into the college of UCLA.  Although people may think he majored in Theatre and Arts, Franco actually majored in English.  During his studies at UCLA, James Franco decided to start acting.  From there, he has taken off into a career that has built his resume which is already impressive and continues to grow.

Franco landed himself a starring role in a new TV show called Freaks and Geeks in 1999, which ended in failure.  Although his first acting job was a disappointment, Franco continued to act in a variety of other movies.

In 2000, he starred in “Whatever It Takes” which led him to emerge as an actor in the movie “James Dean.”

Franco’s career was beginning, and this movie was just the start of a brilliant career. “James Dean” (2001), a movie about a teenager with troubles, starred James Franco.  This teenager was a rebel and had troubled relationship with his father.  Franco was able to open up his talents to the world, and displayed the reasons why he showed up on magazines which opened doorways to multiple movie offers and fame.

“He’s believable,” said sophomore Alan Oswald, “he’s always serious about what he does and does it well, which I like in an actor.”

In 2002, Franco landed an acting job for the movie that still is a hit today.  “Spiderman” took the country by storm.  Showing up in comic books, “Spiderman” (played by Tobey Maguire) was then displayed as a hero.  Although Franco didn’t get the starring role, he was the best friend of Spider-man.  Franco received the honor of playing the Green Goblin in the second movie, and was invited to act in the third movie as well.

Franco has been in a ton of movies and may get offers for others.

Rather than just acting though, Franco has surprised a lot of people by going back to school.

Franco has decided to go back to school to earn a PhD at the University of Yale.  Although he hasn’t received it yet, he has already started his goal and plans to finish

Overall, James Franco started out without a resume and no acting experience going into college, and has grown into a great actor.

“James Franco can be hilarious on screen, but also serious when he needs to be,” said senior Morgan Akers.
