Rev up your engines, because you’ll be racing to theaters to see the new movie “Need for Speed.”
Based off of one of the most successful racing video game franchises of all time, “Need for Speed” tells the story of a former race car driver named Tobey Marshall, who fixes performance-quality cars in a garage with his crew in New York.
For rising star Aaron Paul, who plays Marshall, “Need for Speed” is his first major film role since his appearance in the independent film “Smashed” in 2012. Paul is most recognized from his role of Jesse Pinkman in the hit AMC TV series “Breaking Bad,” one of the most watched television shows of all time.
Dominic Cooper, an English actor who has starred in several popular films such as “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (in theaters tomorrow) and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” plays Dino Brewster, a former rival of Tobey Marshall that offers him a car that could possibly help him win a high stakes race.
Alongside Paul and Cooper, Scott Mescudi (better known as Kid Cudi) plays the role of Maverick, a loyal member of Tobey’s crew. Mescudi is best known for his work in the world of hip-hop, having just recently released his fifth album, “Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon,” which features music from “Need for Speed.”
“Need for Speed” was originally a video game created by Electronic Arts that proved to be a very successful franchise. The game features hundreds of super-fast cars that speed down the streets of cities and highways and is famous for allowing players to try to out-race the cops. In 1994, the game was first released for the PC. After years of success, Need for Speed was released not only for PC, but also for gaming consoles like the PS2 and XBOX.
The game franchise quickly became the model for racing video games around the world. Need for Speed is the top racing game sold in America and set the bar for other racing based game such as Gran Turismo, and Forza Motorsports.
In its first week, “Need for Speed” ranked number one in the box office, and has currently raked up more than 100 million dollars. Rumors of a “Need for Speed 2” are beginning to arise, but there has been no official details released about a sequel.
