Netflix has become one of the best ways to watch your favorite shows and movies whenever you want, wherever you want. With thousands of titles available for streaming, there’s a show for everybody.
Launched in 1998 as a DVD rental company with a pay-per-rent system, Netflix has grown into an entertainment tycoon in less than 20 years, now offering online streaming and DVD rentals for less than $8 a month.
With the emergence of streaming, binge watching has become more and more common among Netflix’s over 80 million users.
“[With] 40 minute episodes, I watch like 4 or 5 episodes,” said senior Austin Peacock.
Binge watching means watching multiple episodes of a TV show at one time, and it seems like it has become a part of people’s daily schedule. Some people spend hours a day watching Netflix, either by themselves for with friends.
“[I watch shows on Netflix] every other day or so for like three and a half hours,” said senior Ryan Yarbrough.
Since it is so easy to stream shows from Netflix, people see themselves ordering less and less DVDs. Netflix has reported that their sales of DVDs have declined ever since they offered online streaming.
“I usually stream on my phone because it’s easier,” said senior Preston Cole.
Netflix has even started making their own content. Netflix has even been making its own shows and movies, including hits like “House of Cards”, “Orange is the New Black”, and “Daredevil.”
“I really enjoy the “Daredevil” series. I binge watch that,” said Cole.
Netflix adds new content to their lineup week after week, so there is always something new and interesting to watch.
“When they add more and more movies, I watch their movies,” said Peacock.
Binge watching has become a common way for people to kill time and relax. Most people stream Netflix when they don’t have anything else to do.
“I use Netflix to watch shows because it’s something to pass the time,” said Peacock.
With the increasing popularity of online streaming, services similar to Netflix have started streaming their own shows. Other services like Hulu or Sling TV don’t compare to Netflix though.
“Hulu has shows that Netflix doesn’t, but it’s set up so weird,” said Yarbrough.
Netflix offers tons of shows and movies, so users can watch anytime or anywhere they please, but it also offers one more big advantage to regular TV. Binge watching lets people avoid those pesky cliffhangers that TV shows like to end their episodes with.
“That’s the best part,” said Peacock, “except when you watch a whole season and have to wait for the next one the come out.”
