“The Nun”: Truly scary?
November 12, 2018
The Nun, starring Taissa Farmiga and Demián Bichir, is about a nun and a priest sent by the Vatican to investigate a demonic spirit that takes the shape of a nun, and haunts an old abbey in a rural part of Romania. Based on the fact that the advertisements for this new horror movie were banned from YouTube for being too scary, I was expecting scream worthy action. And since this movie is a prequel to The Conjuring, I figured it would be terrifying. I was somewhat disappointed, but the plot did intrigue me.
While there were plenty of terrifying jump scares in the movie, to me it was not nearly as scary as The Conjuring. Although, The Nun did have a creepier throughout the entire movie. I was expecting The Nun to be way more scary than The Conjuring, because The Nun is called the “darkest chapter,” so I found that part pretty disappointing.
Additionally, The Nun was very unrealistic. The Conjuring, which is about the Perron family getting haunted by an evil spirit, is allegedly based on real events, and I can honestly see it being one just based on the progression of the movie and how the demon attacks them. But The Nun was just too far out there. While the special effects were very lifelike, it just did not seem like it could ever happen in reality, unlike The Conjuring.
All of that aside, it was very cool to see how aspects of The Conjuring played into The Nun and vice versa. Also, I thought the way that the demon got expelled in The Nun was far more interesting and entertaining to watch compared to The Conjuring. I would also say that the acting was awesome. Personally, I am a huge fan of Taissa Farmiga and Demián Bichir, so to see them work together with great chemistry was very enjoyable to watch. I enjoyed that there was a perfect hint of appropriate humor here and there. And again, I really liked the plot. It was interesting to see everything unfold.
Thus I do recommend seeing The Nun. Even though I was disappointed by some parts, I was still very entertained. Overall, I give The Nun a solid 6.75/10.
