They came, they saw, they ‘settled’ at WS

Many students might have one other sibling that also attends their school, but if you are a member of the Settles family, you see almost your entire family at school every day.

“It’s always exciting to pass them in the hallways, it’s like I never left home!” said Senior Jessy Settles.

All the ladies of the Settles family attend WS, including school nurse and mother of three, Lori Settles, and her daughters, senior Jessy Settles, junior Alyssa Settles, and freshman Holly Settles. Their cousin, freshman Christopher Settles, also attends WS.

Most cousins only see each other during holidays or family reunions, but Chris actually has a few classes with his cousin Holly.

“The only weird part is all my teachers ask if we’re siblings,” said Holly.

With the addition of Holly and Chris, the number of Settles at WS almost doubled this year. As a freshman, having her mom at the school makes the transition to high school easier for Holly.

Some students might think having your mom work at the school would be annoying, but surprisingly it has more pros than cons. Holly, Alyssa, and Jessy have never had to ride the bus to school because their mom can drive them every day. In fact, the clinic office is prime location for the Settles to get out quickly before the buses leave and get home at 2:30.  Having your mom work at the school also comes in handy if you forget to get something signed or need some lunch money.

For the mother of the family, working at the same place as where her children go to school is definitely a bonus.

“Since I moved around a lot and went to more than one high school, I was never involved in very many activities in school,” said Lori.

She loves being a part of all the spirit of WS and having her kids be involved in everything. You probably know one of the Settles if you’re involved in any extracurricular activity. Jessy is a member of the Cross-Country and Track teams, as well as being a Varsity Field Hockey manager. Alyssa is a part of the Theatre department, Holly is a JV cheerleader and Chris plans on playing lacrosse.

“We are everywhere, what fun!” said Lori.

Lori likes to pretend she knows everything that’s going around the school, but she rarely actually hears any gossip about her daughters. The occasional chit chat, however, does reach her ears.

“One time someone was like ‘Jessy Settles is so attractive,’ and they didn’t know I was her mother!” said Lori.
