Jinglin’ souls

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. And that’s exactly what the Madrigals did this year.
The Madrigals decided to share their singing talents with the public this holiday season. Instead of caroling around the school, they performed at venues such as the National Christmas Tree in Washington DC, at the Lee- Fendall House in Alexandria and even before teachers and staff at the annual holiday party. Audience members were treated to a long list of songs ranging from the traditional “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” to the not so typical “Lully, Lulla, Lullay”.
Senior Irene Martinko said, “It was nice being able to spread Christmas cheer to more than people at our school.”
A few of their performances had to be cancelled but that didn’t get them down. They made the best out of the situation and still captivated the audiences with their lovely voices and cheery holiday spirit.
Senior Ellen Abood said, “Performing at the National Christmas Tree was probably my favorite place to perform. While we were singing, someone was getting proposed to in front of the tree and it was really cool knowing we were a part of such a memorable moment for them.”
For weeks the Madrigals tirelessly rehearsed songs to work for a perfect performance. They have preparing since way back in October, and spent most of their free time working diligently on their songs.
“We had seven to eight songs to nail by December so we had to put in a lot of hard work. We worked in class, during Spartan Time and occasionally after school,” said senior Jonathan Fortney.
And their work ethic paid off. The choir showed great maturity and nerves of steel, despite their hectic schedule.
“It takes a lot of discipline to prepare for this kind of thing, you can’t be nervous to perform in front of a large crowd and you have to know that you’ve put in enough effort for a great performance,” Abood said.
The Madrigals will still be busy, planning a concert teamed with Personality to Irving Middle School in late January.
“Overall, caroling was a great experience,” Abood said, “but I’m excited for what this year has in store for us and look forward to singing at more new and exciting places.”
