They are winners, no doubt about it.
A 3-2 win over Patriot High School Tuesday night sends our Spartan Volleyball team into the Northern Region’s Final Four for the first time ever.
While they were making histsory, the girls secured the Patriot Conference Championship for thefirst time since 2007. WSSVB defeated Lake Braddock for the Conference win.
In the past, the volleyball team has only really been classified as “mediocre.” This year they’ve broken that stereotype with their digs, their spikes and fans in The Pit—also known as the Main Gym—that resemble an indoor version of football’s Hype Squad.
The team really feels like family, and that feeling , in addition to some pretty sweet talent, is largely responsibly for the team’s winning ways, according to the players.
“We’re a family on and off the court and are so close this year. We always cover each other when one is down,” said senior Brittany Padgett.
Generally, having support for teammates is a winning tactic for sports teams. Our volleyball team shows this on and off the court. Supporting each other can go a long way and that is proven with our team here at WS.
The players are knowning for demonstrating dedication by setting goals as a team and as individuals. They’re constantly reminded by each other, and by the coach, to reach their goal and reach for their highest potential.
“Hard work and every day at practice in the weight room is always getting us one step closer to our goal,” said Padgett. “We all set [personal] goals for the game and we can help each other on it and remind them of it during the game to help them all.”
Tonight, all of the cohesive traits of the Spartan Volleyball Family will be on display as they host FCPS rival Madison at 7 p.m. in the Main Gym.
“This year we’re playing as a team and working to make the team better and all have the same goal of working hard for every ball,” said junior Tyler Wernecke.
Working hard and giving their all can bring the girls to win and reach their goals. Through hard effort put into daily practices, they have the potential to win it all. They just have to want it.
“This group of girls works so has great attitudes, and play to win,” said Coach Stephanie Noriega.
Our student body and the volleyball team themselves hope to succeed, and hope that the Spartan Hypesquad comes out in force to support them tonight.
Players said they’re not going to stop until they get the thing they’ve been working for: another win. If they win tonight, they’re on to the State tournament because of their successes in the Northern Region.
“We’re playing as a family and we have the drive and passion that helps us never give up,” said Padgett.
Hey, Spartans: Can you dig it?
