Students prepare for the future
December 14, 2015
SGA Leadership students have begun surveying the faculty, specifically Principal Michael Mukai, about how to make a better WS.
Once a month, both leadership classes, have the opportunity have “breakfast with Mr.Mukai,” where students are able to express their opinions, frustrations, and ideas with the most powerful man in the school. Not only do leadership students discuss topics and issues of WS, but the faculty also meets with different class groups of every grade level.
“Everyone should be able to communicate with the admin or principal to give us ideas on how to help improve WS,” said Mukai.
Leadership students often talk about the upcoming renovations and how they are going to affect students. Many questions are raised about the newly paved practice field and the soon-to-be used “learning cottages.”
“The intended month for students to transition to the learning cottages is the beginning of June, 2016,” said Mukai. “The workers have to connect the power and pluming to the cottages before they can be used.”
Leadership students are determined to add a winter event for students to attend in order to get through the harsh winter months. The idea of a winter formal or a Spartan Rave is in discussion with the faculty.
“I think a Sprave[Spartan Rave] would be a great idea for the school during the winter, it’s informal and different which will ultimately make people want to come,” said Mukai.
Extra fun events can only become reality with the staff’s approval and the students’ creativity and hard-work.
Topics that involve sports include the planning of the Student v. Staff basketball game and Boy’s PowderPuff volleyball. For many years, boys’ volleyball has been on a list of things to do but it seems to have always been pushed back. This year, however, the intent is to have a fun-filled game in the spring.
Other than just activities at WS, leadership students discuss the policies of the staff including the Learning Seminar requirement and tardy policy. They discuss the reason the FCPS recommended structured time for students to receive extra help from teachers [Learning Seminar].
Working between the faculty and students will greatly benefit the communication and the operation of WS. Leadership students have even begun asking other students around the school about their questions and concerns for Mr.Mukai.
“Students who aren’t in communication with the administration should reach out to the leadership classes for information, they can also give us their ideas to exchange with them,” said junior Yurie Choe.
