Imagine acting out a scene on a place that is not a stage. Even though WS does not have an auditorium this year, students have still found ways to cope. The auditorium renovation started at the end of May 2017 and is still going on.
Not having an auditorium can be difficult for those who use the auditorium for events such as honor society meetings, theatre classes and musical groups, but they have learned to cope with it.
“I feel like it was a complete bust because we (BSU) had a lot of events that happened in the main gym because of the auditorium going under renovation. We had to change the place multiple times for two events because there weren’t enough seats in the main gym,” said sophomore Jaleiha Hammond.
Theatre classes tend to need auditoriums to perform; however, the theatre program is working without an auditorium this year.
“It’s really hard to put on shows, like we’ve had to shift stages for both Awesome 80’s Prom and the Winter One-Acts. It was really difficult but we’re getting through it,” said sophomore Samantha McQuiston.
Students who are taking theatre not only have to practice but also perform in other places in the school.
“We practice in the chorus rooms and we performed in the chorus room for the Winter One-Acts. We also performed somewhere else for the Awesome 80’s Prom, which was at Offsite, at Burke,” said McQuiston.
But all the hardship will pass when the auditorium reopens. It is slated that the auditorium will open in the last week of March. Students think it’s a great time to reopen the auditorium because there are some events that are going to take place right when it opens, such as the spring musical, Into the Woods, and International Night. Students also think the auditorium is the most suitable place for those events to take place because it will have many seats, a new stage, and be a perfect place to host important events.
“It is a good thing that the auditorium is opening at that time because we have upcoming events that we need to do, and it shouldn’t be done in the main gym because of the lack of amount of space available. A large amount of people are going to attend the event, so the auditorium is a good place for it,” said Hammond.
