Ice and field hockey make a new friend
The list of obscure sports in the world is extensive, including such greats as Camel Wrestling, Quidditch, and even wife carrying. However, one sport rises above them all: Underwater Hockey.
The rules are as simple as they can be. Basically, it’s like hockey underwater, except for the fact that its non-contact and you have to keep the puck moving constantly. The purpose of the game is to you move the puck to their intended end of the ring.
That’s it, simple, right? The sport already seems popular, especially in colleges. George Mason University already offers underwater hockey an intramural and is open to anybody on any skill level. It really is that simple, rule-wise.
“It seems interesting and fun, yeah, I would give it a shot” said sophomore Isaac Doorman.
But what if the school offered it as a club sport or a varsity sport? Would the equipment be expensive? According to GMU’s underwater hockey webpage, all you need is a wooden stick, snorkels, masks, and fins.
“The equipment seems like really cheap stuff, maybe even stuff you can get at the dollar store” says Doorman.
However, there are people in this world who aren’t as open to new or foreign ideas, like sophomore Mike Giordano.
“I wouldn’t try it. It doesn’t make any sense at all” said Giordano.
Some people would like to try the unique sport, like junior Taylor Buckner, who is a part of the school’s swim team.
“It’s definitely different, and it seems fun. I would play it in a group” said Buckner. “Some essential skills that it would require would be knowing how to hold your breath, and knowing how to swim seems pretty important” she said. “Anyone athletic could be able to do it.”
With all of this, one may ask, how do you watch such a weird sport? It would probably be difficult right?
“You could maybe watch the game through one of those big, see-through tanks that you normally see in an aquarium” Said Doorman. “And maybe they would project it on a big-screen.’
