Smoke+Mirrors’ disappoints fans

Imagine Dragons dropped a new album, and that’s good news for their fans.
The group has gotten their biggest opportunity in their careers; a chance to drop a second straight top album. Now, all that matters is how the fans react to it. The group became nationally recognized for their hit song Radioactive off of their first album “Night Visions”. The song was on the Billboard 100 for 87 weeks straight, which according to the Billboard 100 website, is the longest that any song has been on the chart in the chart’s 55 year history.
The band made the new album “Smoke+Mirrors” based on the sound of Radioactive and the the popularity of the song; and is looking to make sure the fans are pleased with the album. The band released three songs as a preview starting early January and the songs have gotten mixed feelings back from fans.
“The songs were good actually, they weren’t bad at all,” said senior Allison Davis, who’s an avid music fan, “They weren’t as good as songs I heard off of ‘Night Visions’ though.”
Due to the high expectations that people have because of how good their last album was, expectations for this album are through the roof. The album dropped on February 18th and so far the album has had mixed reception. Majority of the people are finding this album to be a solid attempt, in a month full of music.
”I don’t like it,” said freshman David Larson, “It’s not interesting and it’s just not as good as I hoped that it would be.”
The album has been called a modern pop rock gem by the website Q.com. The Web site called it an expansion on the group’s debut album. On top of this positive review, the album has also received some negative reviews from The Salt Lake Tribune, calling the album “a hit and miss.”
“The album is more popular than night visions,” said senior Maddie Budreau who’s a big fan of the group. “I just don’t think it’s going to be as good as ‘Night Visions’ was.”
Despite the album being rated 7 points higher than night visions which was rated at 60/100 by Metacritic, fan reception of the album still isn’t as good as hoped for. Only time will tell whether this album will succeed, because the album was released not even a month ago.
“I hope their next album will be better than this,” said Larson.
