Just give yourselfie a pat on the back

But first, let me take a selfie! Or two. Or three.
Selfies have become a major part of social media. Going out with friends? Take a selfie. New glasses? Selfie. Going on vacation somewhere exciting? Take a selfie and toss it onto whatever social media app or website of your choice.
These self-portraits capture special moments in time for us, and promote self-confidence. How? Easy. If people comment positively on another person’s selfie, it is a huge confidence booster. Even if there’s just one measly ‘Like’, every little bit counts.
Selfies also become important when we are looking for advice on clothing and makeup. Feel like your eyeliner isn’t even enough and it’s too early before school to tell? Snap a selfie and send it to a friend for solid second opinion.
Selfies also help a lot while traveling. It’s easier to just snap a picture of yourself in front of Cinderella’s castle with a friend rather than asking some random tourist to do it for you. Often selfies look better than some regular pictures anyway- there is less empty space and everything is lined up just the way you want it. Aesthetic is crucial, after all. Selfies also give us an excellent outlet to express our feelings. A selfie of a student pretending to be asleep in their least favorite class lets you know that, well; it’s their least favorite class. Or if they’re having a busy day, a blurry close up selfie with wild eyes might be in order.
Seeing these expressions make it easier to relate to how others feel. Let’s be real here, whenever a selfie like that pops up it’s beyond easy to relate to whatever is going on.
Others may argue that selfies are selfish- and are signs of self-centeredness. But honestly, they are just ways to express ourselves. Some people may be showing off a little, so what? Let them. If they are proud of themselves, let them have their moment. No need for negative comments- just remember the old saying, ‘If you don’t have something nice to say don’t say anything at all!’ Keep your selfie hate to yourself; no one wants to see it.
This generation is definitely the ‘Me’ generation. Our love for ourselves and each other is important- we are going to be running the world one day and in order to prepare for that we need to be confident in ourselves. So go on, take selfies, save the memories and fill your social media- the world is yours.
