Lights, cameras, selfies (and pizza)!

This year’s Academy Awards led by Ellen had all of this and more!

The 86th Academy Awards was one of the most eventful of the past years, with a pizza delivery, the famed multi-million retweeted selfie that crashed twitter, and “Gravity” winning almost every award nominated… but first can we talk about Pharrell’s shorts!?
The “Happy” singer rolled up to the red carpet with the biggest fashion faux pas of the night. His infamous Arby’s style hat, accompanied by a tuxedo shorts combo landed him at the top of the worst dressed lists. Many commented that the shorts were not appropriate for the prestigious Academy Awards.
On the other end of the spectrum, everyone can unanimously agree that the best dressed of the night was new “It Girl” Lupita Nyong’o. The Best Supporting Actress was dressed in an exquisite custom Prada gown in the color “Nairobi blue”- the baby blue hue that she coined from the colors that reminded her of her hometown in Kenya.
Others who topped the list included Charlize Theron in a plunging black Dior gown and Kate Hudson’s stunning cape-shouldered Versace ensemble.
Inside the venue, Ellen DeGeneres came back to host the Oscars and added her own comical twist to the Awards.
Most memorably, she ordered a few pizzas for the crowd of celebs (and then collected tip money in Pharrell’s wacky hat) and took the best selfie in history with Jennifer Lawrence, Brad and Angelina, Lupita and other A-Listers. DeGeneres lead social media into a frenzy, sending this year’s Oscars to one of the most tweeted about events to date.
But now onto the actual awards, the biggest winners of the night included “Gravity”, “Dallas Buyer’s Club”, and “12 Years a Slave”. “Gravity” swept the competition racking up seven Oscars, including Best Cinematography, Best Directing, and Best Original Score. “12 Years a Slave” won Best Picture, along with Nyong’o’s first Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. “Dallas Buyer’s Club” pulled in the big individual awards: Best Actor in a Supporting Role went to Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey won Best Actor in a Leading Role.
There was also a fair share of awkward moments throughout the show. Presenters like Zac Efron jumbled up their lines, though no one took much notice in his hiccup because the girls were all hypnotized by how sexy he looked in his tuxedo. After “Frozen” won Best Original Song, the enthusiastic “Let it Go” songwriter-duo pulled out their note cards and proved that a synchronized cringe-worthy acceptance speech leaves the audience very…very uncomfortable.
With the numerous hiccups in the show that left us giggling, The Most Awkward Moment Award (by a landslide) goes to John Travolta. While he was introducing Idina Menzel, the aged actor completely butchered the “Let it Go” singer’s name pronouncing it “Adele Dazeem”. This provided us all with a laugh and sparked the creation of a web app from Slate.com that will “Travoltify” your name.
The biggest loser of the night goes to Leonardo DiCaprio who left empty handed, losing to McConaughey for Best Actor in a Leading Role. This was poor Leo’s fourth time losing and sadly enough, the 20th anniversary of his first nomination.
With seemingly the whole world rooting for him, we all felt sympathetic for DiCaprio, although anyone who saw both “Wolf of Wall Street” and “Dallas Buyer’s Club” knew McConaughey was the front runner for the Oscar.
All in all, the 2014 Oscars left us with laughs, and at least we can all still say we have as many Oscars as Leonardo DiCaprio.
