“Plot, plot, and more plot.” is the basis of the fifth season of Once Upon a Time, and avid followers of the fairy-tale TV show are bursting with excitement.
Last season kicked off with the arrival of the stars from Disney’s Frozen, Elsa and Anna, to Storybrooke, the fairytale town the show is set in. The Disney characters do not get along at first with their fairytale colleagues, and their ensuing clashes with The Snow Queen were early highlights.
These events led Emma Swan, the show’s main character, to seek out more answers about her past, as the Snow Queen took away her memory. She learned about her parent’s run-in with Maleficent, and this realization culminated in Emma being discovered by the Rumplestiltskin, who possess the power of the Dark One, an ancient and powerful evil force.
Their resulting clashes establish the foundation for season five.
At the beginning of season five, the show introduces King Arthur and kingdom of Camelot. Years before, Arthur pulled the sword Excalibur from the stone, only to find it was missing a part of it. Since then,
Arthur has kept this secret hidden, and he has an unending desire to find the missing piece to prove to himself he is the rightful king.
Meanwhile back in Storybrooke, Emma was struck with the power of the Dark One, and disappeared into a black tornado, leaving behind her friends Hook, Snow, Charming, and Regina. She lands forest, and is followed by Dark Rumplestiltskin, but soon learns he is just a figment of her imagination of the darkness inside her. While wandering, she meets the frizzy-red haired Merida, and they agree to travel together.
During the journey, Dark Rumplestiltskin pulls a Darth Sidious and pressures Emma to kill Merida and become the Dark One. Emma at first refuses only to use her newfound powers to try to literally take Merida’s heart.
However, Emma’s friends find them and intervene just in time. King Arthur soon gallops in, and he takes the whole group to meet the people of Camelot.
Soon afterwards, Emma returns to Storybrooke, and embraces the Dark One inside her.
The ensuing events lead to several deaths, and eventually the residents of Storybrooke seek out Merlin in an attempt to heal her from the Dark One.
So, fan girls, buckle up for the fifth season of the longest bedtime story ever. Those dating a fan girl or related to one, expect squealing when everyone finds out that Hook definitely does not like Emma.
