Video games: Does new always mean better to WS?

At WS, games such as “NBA 2k17”, “Fifa 17”, and “Grand Theft Auto V” are popular amongst many Spartans, despite the fact that they can be considered old in comparison to the newer games marketed in spring of this year, showing that being older doesn’t mean being boring in the world of video games.

When it comes to video games, most high schoolers have their preferences. Some like the fast-paced shooter games like “Call of Duty” or “Battlefield.” Others like story-based adventure games like “Assassin’s Creed” or “The Witcher.”
Regardless of what kind of video games you like, there are always games that are trending, usually ones that have been released recently and anticipated for a while.
One example is “NBA 2k17,” the latest in a line of successful basketball simulation games, released annually. The “NBA 2k” series lets players mimic an NBA professional basketball game, presented as live TV coverage with simulated sports commentators and a sideline reporter. Players of the game have the ability to play as a personalized basketball player and begin their virtual NBA career in search of fame. Also, they have the option to create a customized team, with famous players from the past, present, and from any NBA team.
Fans of “NBA 2k,” knowing it to be a game released yearly, certainly were happy to see the new edition of their favorite game come out last September.
“ ‘NBA 2k17’ is definitely my favorite game right now,” said Sophomore Areeb Ehtisham. “Right now I’m also playing ‘Fifa 17’ and ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II.’ ”
Indeed, it’s not only new games that are popular. Old games, released over a year or so ago, also continue to be played by many, even more so than some current games.
One example of this is “Grand Theft Auto V,” released all the way back in September of 2013. The game’s continued popularity can be attributed to its many different features. With a large “open world,” a captivating and dynamic storyline, and widely successful online mode, there are a plethora of reasons to return to the game after playing it for the first time.
“ ‘GTA V’ looks fun,” said Sophomore John Reistrup. “But you can’t play it in front of your parents.”
Another game that is currently popular is “FIFA 17.” This popular soccer game is characterized by its realistic simulations of soccer matches. Teams can be customized with internationally recognized players and improved to give you better odds of winning.
It seems that the release date of a game does not always dictate how popular it is, which is certainly true of some favorites amongst high schoolers.
