International Night rocked the auditorium on March 4, with groups from every cultural club bringing their own flavor of performance, food, or both.
Before the main event, the sports lobby played host to a variety of dishes from the Spanish Honor Society, the Jewish Culture Club, and the Muslim Student Association. Matzo balls, kebabs, and Spanish quiche were all available for sale within a few square feet.
“It’s good to for all the clubs to get together, and it’s fun to bring the taste of our heritage to everyone else,” said senior Hasni Djouadi of the MSA.
For the clubs, most of the money made would be going to charities and funding future activities.
After the world-market-style food court, the main events began in the auditorium. Among the opening acts was the German class, featuring rock songs performed by both the students and German teacher Christopher Trimble, with the aid of the guitar class.
The other acts included amazing singing and dancing numbers in Korean and Spanish, and the finale was a thunderous dance performance. Singers with guitars, keyboards and any combination of the three sang both prominent songs by bands from the country they represented, as well as original songs which were good enough to be featured on network talent shows.
While most of the acts were singing, the Japanese Honor Society showed a silent play which acted out a kind of Japanese famous fable. It was a much more humorous performance, an account of a father learning to not unfairly judge others who want to marry his daughter.
The Muslim Student Association held their own fashion show toward the end. Members presented clothing they had made, their inspiration coming from their countries of origin, including Iraq and Pakistan. The girls showed off shimmering dresses, and there was a few stylish digs for the men including traditional style suit.
Overall International Night proved a resounding success. Both the food and the performances showed off the unique qualities of everyone involved.
“It’s helps people to know we have a stance,” said junior Josh Khaykin of the Jewish Culture Club, “and it’s an amazing way to express culture.”
