Annual Homecoming cheer: We’ve got spirit!
It was bittersweet, but senior Lauren Zachar was relieved when Homecoming Week 2013 was finally over.
Zachar was part of the leadership/SGA crew that organized and coordinated all the different events and people to pull together six days of spirited events. Although it was a stressful week, it was worth it in the end.
“It was really rewarding once our part in homecoming was over after halftime and the king and queen had been announced. We were finally able to relax knowing that we had organized a successful spirit week,” said Zachar.
Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed by the student body.
“As a senior I appreciated homecoming a lot more because it was my last one and we were all really hyped the entire week. I think the older you are you’re not afraid to go full out and you’re more confident which makes the entire week a lot more fun,” said senior Semere Desta.
Seniors weren’t the only WS students showing their spirit. With ‘Murica Monday, Tourist Tuesday, Workout Wednesday, Through the Generations Thursday, and Spartan Friday as spirit days this year, even underclassmen were spurred to participate.
“I definitely had a different perspective this year as a sophomore knowing that you can go full out and not be judged. The spirit days this year were great. My favorite was definitely Generation Day because it was hilarious seeing all the seniors dressed up as old people,” said sophomore Alison Gray.
The senior class was the highlight of the week, almost finishing the week with a flawless record. They won the hall decorating contest, Powderpuff, and most spirited, but lost to the three-time champion float-building Class of 2015.
Perhaps the most heartwarming moment was when the homecoming king, Andrew Cho and queen, Megan Bleakley were crowned. WS Spartans showed their camaraderie as they gave Bleakley a standing ovation and roared her name when she won.
“Out of all four homecomings I’ve been a part of throughout high school, these past two have definitely had the strongest feeling of community. They were by far the most memorable and made me proud to be a WS Spartan,” said Zachar.
