Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa has come to town! It seems Santa decided to come a little early this year. In mid-December the WSHS Choir held its annual “Breakfast with Santa,” a long time Spartan tradition, occurring every year in hopes to spark smiles on little kids’ faces just as the holiday season has started.
Parents and children were invited to come to the school on a Saturday morning to spend a few hours singing, dancing, eating, making crafts, and getting to know Santa a little bit better.
Santa didn’t come alone this time around. He brought some of his good friends with him! The choir dressed up as their favorite Disney princesses and other characters, anything to put a smile on the kids’ faces this holiday season.
“[It’s] not required [of] any of us [to] come,” said senior Grace Duah. “But who would pass the chance to dress up like [their] favorite princess or Buzz Lightyear?”
In preparation, students signed up about two weeks ahead of time to pick their costumes. The students who didn’t get the chance to dress up were assigned to different stations to help with the crafts, food, and keeping the other activities in order. Not only the choir students participated, but parents also got involved in making this experience as magical as possible.
“The parents are a big help in the whole process” said senior Brittany Padgett.
The week before was spent putting the finishing touches on the music set to be performed during the breakfast, setting up decorations, and putting the final touches on costumes.
“The costumes and all that take about a week,” said Padgett. “The songs took about two months in advance to prepare.”
The most important thing is that the kids had fun, after all, the event was all for them. The proceeds of the fundraiser go to the choir department to help pay for other activities and events they may partake in throughout the rest of the school year.
“Breakfast with Santa” is a great opportunity to do something good for the kids whose number one priority this time of the year is to lock in their spot on the “nice” list while gaining funds. With a phenomenal turnout, “Breakfast with Santa” was the perfect way to kick off the holiday season with some cheer!
“The feeling of seeing a little kid cry of excitement is probably the best feeling in the world,” said Padgett. “That’s when we know we’ve accomplished something.”
