Ambition is tradition for winter sports

Athletes persevere through cold, dreary practices in order to achieve

As the fall sports season wraps up and the colder weather comes in, the school begins to buzz with excitement for our winter sports.

The girl’s basketball team has been one of the best teams in the district and region. Though they played very well last season with a 26-4 record, they are always looking to improve.

“We need to stay focused in practice and take advantage of the time we have” said senior forward Lindsey Mares.

Hopefully their hard work will pay off. They have their eyes set on states once again.

“We should definitely win districts, hopefully regionals. It would be nice if we made states too, then we would have made it all four years for me.” said Mares.

During winter swim and dive also begins. They are trying to improve off of last season, where they lost only to Woodson in districts. They are surely looking forward to trying to beat them this season.

“It’s definitely a goal to try to beat [Woodson] this year” said sophomore Connor MacKinnon.

Winter wrestling also has some ambitious goals this year.

“Well as far as expectations go we want and we expect to win.” Said sophomore Derek Smith

Wrestling practices this year have been harder than usual, and students have been quitting as a result. Long runs, weight lifting, and above all “live” wrestling drills leave kids exhausted by the end of practice. Their first meet is in a few weeks, and team members are all eager to see if their practicing will pay off.

Our Track team is also preparing for the season. This season they our looking to have a great year with returning stars from last year.

“The boy’s 4x800m relay is looking to build off of their State Qualifying relay from last winter and spring, as they return all 4 relay runners.” said Coach Chris Pellegrini.

The track team also has returning All-State runners Caroline Alcorta and Maddie Wittich who run the 1600m and 3200m and Junior John Seals, the returning Outdoor District Champion in the High Jump.

This upcoming season the boy’s basketball team is looking to keep the trend of improving their record every year ever since Coach Eldredge became a Spartan. Last season the ended with a 7-16 season, more than doubling the amount of wins they had last year.

“We have one of the hardest schedules in the district, but we are used to competing” said Eldredge.

They aren’t expecting state titles, but they are looking to be a contending team in the district.

“We want to be a .500 team or better this season” said Eldredge

The last season a boy’s basketball team had a better than .500 records was back in 06-07. Some students might think .500 or better is a little stretch, but Trier Mortlock disagrees,

“Because of our past, [its might] look like that, but [now] we kind of made a name for ourselves”
