Mr. Spartan has been an old tradition that used to involve a male beauty pageant during Homecoming Week.

After a long hiatus, there is a possibility WS might be bringing back the popular event, “Mr. Spartan,” in early 2016.
Mr. Spartan was a tradition unique to WS— an out-of-the-ordinary male beauty pageant that gives guys a chance to showcase themselves to the entire school. It hasn’t been done in seven years, but this year, SGA is considering bringing it back.
SGA Sponsor Sam Jonssen a Spartan from the Class of 2006, a took over as the Leadership teacher this year.
When Jonsson was a student here, Mr. Spartan was an annual tradition during Homecoming Week. As years passed, this tradition slowly died down.
During the 2013-2014 school year, there was an attempt at an event similar to Mr. Spartan during a pep rally, but this year’s senior class is the first class to have a real sense of determination to bring the male beauty pageant back.
Mr. Spartan is anticipated to make its debut in early 2016, most likely in an assembly. Though the primary participation in the past has been seniors, it is an attempt to unify all of the classes.
The Leadership class, composed of both juniors and seniors, has a mutual agreement that bringing back Mr. Spartan could be an enjoyable event for the school.
Mr. Spartan could be a positive event for the whole school; since the building will be changing with the upcoming renovations, an old tradition may be a refreshing event that everyone can enjoy amidst the change.
The Class of 2016’s senior superlatives may be featured at Mr. Spartan if the event goes through.
This is an exciting change that allows much more of the class to be involved as opposed to the typical voting of superlatives through blackboard
This should up the participation in superlatives since usually only a small portion of the senior class participates in the actual voting
It also adds a creative twist on a traditional senior class activity that many more would preferably do over voting through the computer
As long as it’s inclusive to everyone, Mr. Spartan seems like it will be a positive, fun time that everyone could be involved in.
Some thought has also been given to hosting a senior pasta dinner. In the past, these functions had the effect of raising lots of money and bringing everyone together.
If this dinner were also recreated, it’d be a change from the car washes and other means of fundraising to help lower senior expenses.
Since times have changed and costs have gone up, students would probably be willing to partake in any activity that could potentially bring down the costs, especially one with food.
Many students are eagerly waiting to hear if these events will be a reality. While nothing is set in stone, class and SGA officers and class members are working hard to make Mr. Spartan a reality.
