Perfection at Peterson’s

While driving through the narrow roads of historic Clifton, it can be easy to miss one of its biggest treasures: Peterson’s Ice Cream Depot.
The Depot is one of Northern Virginia’s hotspots for milkshake-drinkers and ice cream-eaters alike and although it’s well known for its ice cream, the atmosphere at Peterson’s is just as cool.
As you walk up to order, you’ll most likely encounter a line, as I did, but it is definitely worth the wait. Their menus are written on chalkboards with lots of fun colors that are very trendy. The layout is setup like a train station; you order at one window, and pick up your ice cream at another without ever going inside the building.
“It was a cute setup,” said junior Rebecca Richardson. “You walk down the path and the building was really cute.”
Behind the store there is a sitting area with tables, chairs, and backyard games. Their lawn games are very fun and provide a relaxing feel, so don’t rush to leave. It gives you an opportunity to enjoy your ice cream and chat with friends. The backyard is the cherry on top of their delicious ice cream sundae.
Even though Peterson’s is a great place to hang out, it wouldn’t attract so many customers with only average ice cream. They offer many different flavors for malts and shakes, and flavors of normal soft serve too. New this year, they’re offering homemade hard serve ice cream that’s off the charts good!
I had a scoop of mint that was delicious and the dark chocolate was so creamy and rich it was hard to finish. You can also order sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, and other Peterson’s specialties. If you’re not in an ice cream mood, you can try one of their hot dog or french fry options.
Peterson’s is a must-try ice cream shop, and it’s one of my favorites. Their unique location lets you get away from the hustle and bustle of NOVA, and enjoy a little piece of heaven; it feels like you’re south 2 hours away, when you’re really only 15 minutes. Unlike other ice cream shops, they provide homemade ice cream, and an unforgettable experience.
“It was whimsical,” said Richardson, “It was different than just going into a store in a strip mall.”
I’d give Peterson’s 5 out of 5 stars. Occasionally the wait is a little long, but that’s only because their ice cream is just that good. The next time you’re looking for a place to get awesome ice cream, head on over to Peterson’s for an unforgettable taste of yum. Bon appétit!
