These Spartans just dive right in

This past weekend the Swim & Dive team ended their record breaking season with another record breaking performance at the Virginia AAA State Championships.

The Swim & Dive team sent 23 athletes, including 9 athletes with individual events and all 6 relay teams. The girls came in 4th out of 49 other teams and the boys placed 16th out of 40 other teams.

The path to states was not an easy one. Practices before school, as well as practices after school haven’t been a walk in the park, but senior captain Joey Spaziani thinks they paid off.

“People have been working hard at club practices before school” said Spaziani

Spaziani believes this is one of the many reasons why they sent so many athletes to states. Practices start before school at 4 AM for most club teams. These early practices along with year-round practices with club teams help get swimmers into proper condition and more time to work on their strokes.

“[The club practices] help us get more prepared for the season,” said senior William Bryan.

To go along with their appearance at states, the Girls 400 Freestyle Relay came in second and broke their own record clocking in with a 3:35.77. With this time the Girls 400 Freestyle Relay met the time standard for All American Consideration.

“I was really excited [when I found out]” said sophomore Robyn Dryer. “It was what I was working for all season.”

Dryer also broke several individual records at states including the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke. During the regular season Dryer also broke the 100 Freestyle and 50 Freestyle School Records during the regular season.

“They’re nice, I am able to see all my hard work pay off” said Dryer.

Senior Jake Anderson also went out with a bang as he broke the school’s boy’s 50 free. He, as well as many other seniors were able to end their spartan swimming careers on a high note.

“It feels good, I mean I have be doing it with my friends for 4 years now” said Spaziani.
