Student section goes yellow for Bleakley

Supporters deck out in yellow, the official color for bone cancer awareness

Say hello to some serious yellow.

At the football game in early November, students could be seen sporting all-yellow ensembles in honor of senior Megan Bleakley, who has been battling bone cancer since May.

“A couple of friends and I had the idea at the beginning of the year,” said senior Lauren Dameron. “We thought it would be a nice way to support Megan.”

Recently, the idea of the entire student section wearing the same color to football games has become quite popular. Students will designate certain games to be an orange-out, or perhaps a white-out. Because of this recent phenomenon, Bleakley’s friends wanted to honor her with one of these color-outs.

Since yellow is the official color for bone cancer awareness, a yellow-out seemed like it would be a perfect way to show Bleakley some school-wide appreciation.

“I was really happy when I found out,” said Bleakley. “It’s nice to see that people actually care. The yellow-out was also great to raise awareness because most children’s bone cancers don’t get a lot of attention.”

Anyone who came to or saw photos of the game could clearly see plenty of students decked out head-to-toe in yellow.

“School spirit is pretty high at WS,” said Assistant Director of Student Activities and Leadership teacher Betsy Fawsett. “For those that attended the game, they certainly came out in all yellow.”

Unfortunately, Bleakley was unable to make an appearance at the game due to a fever. Her friends, however, eagerly showed her pictures of the event so that she could see a visible sign of her fellow students’ encouragement.

“It was really cool to see pictures. It’s nice that everyone came together to support me,” said Bleakley.

Bleakley and her friends and family were all touched by the gesture.

“I think it really made a big impact on her. It showed Megan that she can come back to school without being shunned, and how many people care about her,” said Dameron, “it’s really nice to see all of the support for her; it brightens my day.”

Bleakley and her family all have been extremely thankful for the help and encouragement they’ve received.

“At the homecoming game when Megan was crowned queen and everyone chanted her name, she thought it was so sweet. Her mom really appreciated it as well,” said Dameron.

One thing that has been made crystal clear to anyone who spends any amount of time around here is that WS is a strong community.

“I think our school is extremely spirited. It’s one of the main reasons why I love WS. There’s a real sense of community, which is important,” said Fawsett.
