Football team starts off strong

With three huge wins against Edison, Robinson, and Lee already under their belts, the varsity football team is destined for greatness this season. Improvements have been made in order to prepare to meet the goal of winning the Patriot District Championship.

“Two-a-days, off-season conditioning, and [watching] film,” says junior Jacob Pickell, describing the preseason preparation.

The team has not only prepared themselves physically, but they have also come together as a unit.

“Instead of individuals, we’re more of a team this year,” senior Dominic Esposito comments.

This dedication to teammates helps to fuel the energy needed for success, and their successes have been nothing less than impressive. With the season opener at Edison High resulting in a winning score of 49-19, the team created high hopes for students. The high scores continued at the first home game when the team crushed Robinson 38-14, and endured against Lee with a win of 33-14.

Because the Spartan football team had somewhat of a disappointing four wins and six losses last year, the early-season wins mean a lot to the Spartan student body. Students, teachers and even parents participated in the white-out at the first home game and the orange out at the second in order to motivate the football team to even more victories. Seniors had already decorated trash cans and organized chants to fire up the crowd and team by the beginning of the Robinson game. There may be less body paint as the weather gets cooler, but the Spartan Pride will not falter.

The winning streak has suggested a successful and exciting in-district performance for the Spartans.

“We’re not to be messed with, we’re a top team, and we can perform with elite level teams,” senior John McAndrew says as a message to the other seven teams in the district. Players are confident and fired up to face rivalries such as South County and Lake Braddock in the district. With these blowout wins and the energizing school spirit showed during the first two games, the WS football team is now an intimidating opponent.

“We shouldn’t be taken lightly,” says Esposito.
