Spring sports squeeze the most out of recent fundraising opportunities

From mattresses to oranges, the WS spring sports fundraisers sell everything you could ever need.
Every year Spartan Athletes and volunteers are given the mission to raise money for their program in various ways. Teams run sales and clinics for their athletes, as well as rising freshmen, to get them ready for the season. For the 9th straight year the Cheerleading program held a cheerleading clinic for their athletes.
“[The clinic] is for our cheerleaders and for 8th graders too. They don’t get an opportunity until tryouts to work with other cheerleaders,” said head coach Fawsett.
The clinic helps prepare the cheerleaders for their season along with raising money for their uniforms every year.
Baseball also runs a winter clinic for younger players that are still in little league. Little leaguers, ages 6 to 12, participate in the clinic to work on their fundamentals with the WS coaches and players
“We try to run through a normal practice that we would run indoors,” said senior Frank Sturek.
The clinic consists of hitting and fielding drills that the team runs during their rained-out practices. The clinic also allows players to begin to work together with their teammates.
“You get to work with teammates that you are going to play with for the next three months,” said Sturek.
Coach Olms also believes the clinic helps the athletes improve themselves as players by coaching
“The more baseball they teach, the better they get,” said Olms
The profits from the clinic are used to improve the fields and get new equipment.
The boy’s lacrosse team ran a citrus sale for the first time this season. Usually, the Spartan Boosters and volunteers run the sale and distribute the citrus, but this year they didn’t get enough volunteers to run it. Because of the lack of volunteers, Spartan lacrosse players went door to door selling fruit.
“The Boys Lacrosse Program has 52 players and each of the players benefit in some way from the fundraiser,” said varsity lacrosse coach Settar.
The team also went to lacrosse tournaments to sell fruit, but their biggest sale was at Spartan Fest in the fall. The sale racked up $3500 that went to new jerseys and helmet decals for the JV team.
“It was a very successful fundraiser,” said senior John McAndrew, “and it was fun hanging out with my friends just selling fruit.”
