Field Hockey focuses on teamwork and chemistry

Field Hockey: just something else we got from the Brits.

Field Hockey is a game that was originally played in England and came to the in the 19th century with its similar positions  to soccer and sticks like lacrosse has really grown in popularity in high schools across the country and our Lady Spartans have jumped on this opportunity to play a less straightforward high school sport and get to know a unique group of girls.

“Our team had a really good bond, which made [the season] more enjoyable,” said senior Josie Siveroni, “we did a lot better than what was expected of us too.”

In the 2012 season the Lady Spartans performed very well and had excelled past what had been predicted, with the help of their 2013 seniors. After losing more than half of their starting lineup, the returning players had doubts about how their season would go without those girls that were essential to their success the year before. Without these players other returning players had to step up and fill a leadership role.

“It made me more focused and more aware of what needed to be done on the field,” said Siveroni.

In addition to leadership from many of their returning players, the team also had a strong bond that made them not only enjoy the season more but allowed them to connect and have a better chemistry which was reflected on the field.

“There were teams we would play that, when they were losing, would get mad and yell at each other but we would always stay supported,” said junior Maddy Payne.

When spending the entire week with the same group of people you get to know each other very well and learn to love each other. The Lady Spartans had team dinners the day before every game and team sleepovers to tie the team together.

“We did [a] lock-in, which was absolutely the most fun thing out of everything,” said sophomore Devon Nelson, “we had a dance off that was hilarious; everyone laughed their heads off.”

Although the season wasn’t as long as they had hoped WS should be very proud of the ‘Fockey’ team and all they achieved both on the field and as a team.

“Even though we weren’t supposed to do that well because of all the seniors we lost, we came together and ended up having a great season,” said junior Danielle Triebwasser.
