Basketball is on a fastbreak to success

All of the pain, the green days, the weekly mileage, the grind. After a grueling offseason full of hard work, the Spartan basketball team is ready to take on whatever challenge awaits them this year. It’s time to “Bring em’ out”.
After a tough season in which the boys’ basketball team won four games, the players are looking forward to storming the court and proving to the rest of the Patriot Conference that they are one again a threat. This year’s roster boasts a plethora of experience and confidence that the players will carry with themselves going into the season.
“We have a strong team this year; [these players] have been together for four years now under the same coach. We definitely have high expectations for this season,” said senior Trier Mortlock.
The team has placed an emphasis on creating more wins and sculpting a style of play that will be exciting for the fans to watch, and that is dramatically different when compared to previous teams.
“We’re going to play really fast-paced, up-tempo basketball. We will have a lot of dunks and three’s, it should be really exciting for people to watch,” said Mortlock.
This year’s schedule will test this squad to its absolute limit. They will kick-off the new year against Thomas Jefferson High School, but as the season progresses they will face off against Robinson, Lake Braddock, and T.C. Williams. To wrap-up the year, they will have to match up against the formidable Montrose Christian School.
“We’re going to go out there and play hard no matter what; these games are good practice for our regular season. We are going to treat those tough teams like any other opponent,” said Mortlock.
The team has set the bar high for themselves and they know exactly where they want to be at the end of the season. The team mentality for the season is success and nothing less.
“We want to bring home a conference championship, our main goal this year is to go as far as possible,” said sophomore Spencer Askew.
The team has logged countless hours into their offseason workouts and committed to the tough process in order to improve in all aspects. These dual football/basketball workouts were intended to build the confidence of the players and become a team that is prepared to weather any adversity presented throughout the course of the season.
“We won’t back down, we’re not afraid to play anyone just because of their rank or claim. We have put in more work than a lot of people out there and we believe in what we can do,” said Askew.
