Nationals disappoint again; what’s new?

After some World Series hype, Nationals miss the playoffs once again

Last year the Washington Nationals were on top of the baseball world taking the league by surprise and making it into the play offs but after losing in the 1st round the Nationals were out. This year the Nationals have led many fans to disappointment in a season filled with ups and downs.

The Nationals moved to Washington in 2005 and last year was the first time they made it to the playoffs. In 2012 with a record of 98-64, a phenomenal season for anyone, this year the Nationals were projected to win the World Series, but the Nationals finished second in the National League east and did not contend for the wildcard spot, disappointing many fans with their 86-76 performance.

“The Nationals never played well this season; they had the talent but not the performance, Gio Gonzales let them down and they should have won the division,” said sophomore Andrew Kobylski.

Last season the Nationals dominated the league with overpowering pitching and clutch hitting. This combination allowed them to dominate the league during the regular season. This year there Nationals suffered many injuries and played with less enthusiasm and energy then last season. Last season players like Stephen Strasburg and Ryan Zimmerman led the Nationals to many victories.

“Ryan Zimmerman is my favorite Nationals player because he has played with them a long time, is a strong defensive third basemen and a good captain,” said sophomore Andrew Storr.

This season things changed, from the 2012 season to the 2013 season nationals stats have dropped in many categories including team averages and stolen bases. In the 2012 season the Nationals were more fun to watch and statistically better. But there is still love for our home team. Despite the horrible season fans are hopeful they will come back strong next year and there is always a chance that the Nationals will be better.

Over the years Zimmerman has been a strong player for the Nationals. During those years the Nationals have been struggling but were always working harder and becoming better. With new talent and high draft picks the Nationals have raised the bar developing into a team to contend with.

“The bullpen was solid last season but had a huge drop off this season along with lack the of run support caused a rough season this year,” said junior Mikey Parton.
