WS Admin donut forget Honor Roll students

Students receiving As and Bs are rewarded sweetly

Doughnuts make WS honor roll students go nuts.
Each quarter, students who make it onto the A/B Honor Roll are rewarded for their academic achievements.
“Members of the administration decided that we needed to do something for the students on the honor roll,” said Assistant Director of Student Services Mary Halfhill.
This year marks the third year of these honor roll receptions, during which doughnuts and juice boxes are provided on Wednesday mornings. For students who work hard to maintain their high averages, these receptions provide an incentive to continue to put effort into their school work.
“I like the fact that we get rewarded for our grades,” said sophomore Rebecca Richardson.
Though honor roll students appreciate the efforts of the administration, there are, of course, some who suggest changes and improvements for future events.
“They should have something that makes it more fun, like music,” said sophomore Hannah Kiene.
Serving doughnuts makes sense with WS’s weekly schedule. The eight o’clock start time on Wednesday mornings facilitates an easily-accessible breakfast function.
“With the late opening on Wednesday, it was decided that a reception would be what we would do,” said Halfhill.
Since the first reception three years ago, the number of students on the honor roll has increased an incredible amount. The doughnuts have indeed done their job, providing a delicious incentive that a growing number of WS students reach for.
“There were just 600 [students on the honor roll] when it first started, and there were 956 third quarter,” said Halfhill, “I’m sure they aren’t just doing it [to get] a doughnut, though.”
While serving doughnuts is evidently a successful means for motivating students, this type of Wednesday morning reception might not be the only type of reward the administration has in mind.
“We may do something different in the spring,” said Halfhill, “It will still be some kind of reception, but will have a different venue.”
No matter how it’s done, WS honor roll students tend to appreciate the incentive the administration has provided for them in recent years. Clearly, doughnuts are a good way to motivate honor roll students to remain on their studious paths.
“It’s better than sitting around doing nothing on a Wednesday,” said Kiene. “They should have it every week.”
