Spartans on Spring Break

For most, Spring Break is a time to get away from school and soak up all of the relaxation and fun that high school sometimes fails to deliver.
But some students at WS decided to dedicate their precious time to more demanding activities including sporting event and mission trips.Junior Adham Nabhan spent his Spring Break on a baseball tournament trip with his teammates.
“The team took a trip down to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to compete in a baseball tournament against other teams in the country.” said Nabhan.
The Mingo Bay Classic Tournament hosts top high school teams from all around the country; WS began competing in the tournament just this past year. The five day trip incorporated several games against challenging teams. With some heavy hitting and superior play making the team placed third out of the teams in the tournament, but also had time to relax and soak up the sun on the beach.
While the baseball team was competing in their tournament in hopes of winning it all, juniors Derek Smith and Justin Hamilton, along with other WS students, were out helping people in need.
The Messiah United Methodist Church group went to Philadelphia, Mississippi on what they call the Choctaw Mission, named after the Choctaw Native Americans that they lend a hand to each year.
“The goal of the mission is to build relationships and give support to people that need it,” said junior Derek Smith.
The group traveled down to Mississippi to help run activities with the Great Spirit Methodist Church; a local church run predominately by Native American members.
“The best part of the trip was that I got to meet new people and learn about their culture” said Hamilton.
Members of each church participated in crafts, playing on the playground, and other spirit building activities. These students have proved that lending a helping hand or participating in a team building tournament can be just as fun as relaxing during break.
If ever bored during a break or even summer vacation, think of some productive things to do that can help improve the lives of others or you’re own life. Breaks shouldn’t be just about relaxing and getting away from school, but they should also be used as a time to engage in new, exciting activities.
“At the Church, we helped them with repairs, and held a Bible Study with the kids” said Hamilton.
The WS baseball team and the Messiah United Methodist church both had a productive and eventful time on their trips, while remembering to take time to relax and have fun.
“We do this every year, and I look forward to doing it again” said Hamilton.
