Homecoming scores

A time of rivalry and unity; a time for the arts and a time for athletics; Homecoming is long-anticipated and one of the most exciting weeks of the school year. Organizers considered year’s one of the best in recent history.
The idea of class rivalry is particularly prevalent during Homecoming Week and there was no shortage of competition this year. The first competition of the week is the annual Powderpuff game, during which the Class of 2015 continued its dominance, winning their third game in as many years.
“It was awesome winning [and] the best part was getting a first down and dodging every girl who tried to get my flag,” said junior Natalie Pham.
The juniors’ eyes are already set for next year’s competition against Abby Tobias and this year’s sophomores, who put up a solid win over the freshmen.
“I’m just excited for the game next year. We’re going to bring it,” said junior Taylor Buckner.
As always, the floats are another big part of the Homecoming experience, although the parade was cancelled because of bad weather and students had a small window to celebrate class creative accomplishments.
The lack of parading, however, had little effect on the spirits of the Spartan community and many came to see each interpretation of the Homecoming theme, “Once Upon a Homecoming.”
The sophomores took first place, beating out the seniors who had previously won three straight titles for best Homecoming float.
The seniors did make up for their earlier second-place performances by winning the hallway-decorating competition, turning Senior Rail and Senior Hall into a dazzling winter wonderland based on the movie “Frozen.”
With all the competition surrounding the week, however, what Homecoming is truly about is uniting the student body in one big Spartan Spirit hug. This idea was most prominent in the Homecoming Assembly, where students were able to demonstrate their skills on the big stage.
While many Homecoming staples made a return, such as the Dance Team and Personality performances; there were also a few new acts on the stage this year. This included a hilarious skit on the tradition of asking a date to the Homecoming dance, which was put on by the drama department and had the whole auditorium laughing.

“I really enjoyed being a part of the assembly this year! I love it when the [drama] department can get more recognition for the hard work we do,” said senior drama student Joey McNally.
Spirit Week has always also allowed student to show off their school spirit through days such as Down-the-Rabbit-Hole Day and Sleeping Beauty Day.
“I love being able to dress up like another person, which is probably because I love the theater and acting,” said McNally.
The climax of the week for many is the Homecoming game, which this year featured Conference opponent West Potomac, who defeated WS in a tight game last year. This was a new year however, and the Spartans breezed past the Wolverines in a 35-13 victory, their first Homecoming win in four years.
“[Winning the Homecoming game] feels amazing because I felt we made the school really happy,” said senior and Varsity receiver Anthony Masih.
“I feel like we are really coming together as a school,” said Masih.
