Spartans honor seniors with 3-0 win

With their hearts pounding and eyes wide, senior athletes anticipate Senior Night with excitement and nervousness alike.
For the seniors who play sports, there is one night during the season that stands out from all the rest: Senior Night. This night is special, because it celebrates all the senior athletes’ achievements throughout their years playing at WS. On Friday, October 3rd, the field hockey seniors got to experience the whirlwind of emotions that accompanies Senior Night. Many seniors felt very apprehensive; they had waited for this moment their whole high school careers, and were ecstatic, but at the same time they were destroyed by the thought that they will perhaps never see their teammates again.
“Being a senior didn’t seem real until that night…it finally hit me that I was going to leave my home,” said senior Vi Vo.
For many, Senior Night represents a time the seniors can be recognized for their hard work and dedication to the team, and for them to have a chance to be remembered before the last goodbye. Every senior is rightfully honored for what they have done for the field hockey program by each senior announcing their future college endeavors, finally understanding how their commitment has totally been worth their while.
“[You] realize you reap what you sow… [and] everything that you have done has paid off,” said senior Brittan Muir.
Senior Night means so much to not only the seniors, but to the underclassmen too. The underclassmen are the teammates who have to say goodbye to the seniors before they have to leave as well. Underclassmen have to cope with the loss of a new set of seniors every year.
“They have taught me a lot… [and are] always so encouraging and spirited and fun to be around…I’m really going to miss that,” said sophomore Katie Kachejian.
It is on this night that nostalgia can hit seniors the hardest. Back when they were freshman, these seniors longed to be where they are today, not realizing the tremendous effort and heart it would take to get to where they were on Senior Night. But on that Friday, these seniors’ time had finally come. Their days of cheering were over; it was their turn to be cheered on.
“It’s wierd to be receiving the flowers instead of giving them” said senior Danielle Triebwasser.
On this night, every single player on the team feels that they need to work that much harder on the field to ensure a perfect game for each other, and especially for the seniors.
“I felt sad and happy at the same time. And I thought we had to win no matter what,” said Vo.
Proving their determination, field hockey successfully beat West Potomac three to none.
