Spartan swimming is making waves

The Swim and Dive team is gearing up to make a huge splash this season, and it couldn’t come soon enough.
Girls and Boys Swim Team members all over WS have started to prepare for the upcoming season and tryouts. They’ve been practicing morning and night with their club teams as tryouts started November 10th.
“If I make the team I will work hard and be committed,” said senior Brittlan Scott.
Scott plans to try out for the first time this year after coming from a different school’s swim team.
There are at least 24 freshmen who plan to tryout and 21 returning seniors.
“The thing that is special is that when freshmen come in, we make them feel like family,” said senior Javier Ruisanchez.
However, with new members joining, last year’s seniors will be missed, even as their legacies live on with their hard-to-beat records.
“It’s going to be a good season for us, although we lost a lot of seniors that were fast, we have a lot of freshmen that are going to do big things for the team,” said Ruisanchez.
It will also be different for swimming and diving seniors being the role models of the team.
“It’s going to be sad because there won’t be anyone for us to look up to, people will be looking up to us now,” said senior Abby Brewer.
With the girls’ team going undefeated last year, and the boy’s finishing second in the Patriot Conference, there will be big shoes to fill.
The hope is to bring WS another title and have even greater achievements than last year.
“Our goal is to build on our success from last year,” said Coach Kristy Kellogg.
Last year’s season was monumental for the teams and will be challenging to top. However, coaches and swimmers are positive they can live up to everyone’s expectations.
There is also a huge addition to the dive team, a new coach. The expectations are high for him and no one is quite sure what to expect with a new coach coming to the team.
“We have a new dive coach so we are seeing what he can do,” said Brewer.
Brewer is also a team captain and has several duties to fulfill for the team.
“I help plan fundraisers and pick out team suits,” said Brewer.
Being a team captain is a great achievement and requires a lot of responsibility, even for a seasoned swimmer like Brewer. Swimmers, divers, parents, fans, and coaches are all looking forward to a new season and hope for exceptional times.
“I am confident that WS will have a strong team.” Said Kellogg.
